WOOLLY RAM 1991

$250.00

【 The Concept 】

The zodiac sheep of the New Year, pared down to a plump, gentle little form. It stands square on four short legs, its body rounded almost to an egg to suggest the deep pile of a fleece, a single soft fold drawn at the neck, and a pair of spiral horns curled tight against the sides of the head — the ram's one flourish on an otherwise quiet shape. The face is barely drawn, the eyes all but closed, so the whole animal reads as calm and mild. That is the point of the sheep: a flock animal that keeps the peace, it stands in the East for family togetherness, harmony, and safety, its warm wool a kind of shield against harm. There is wealth in it too — in old reckoning flocks were riches, and the very character for sheep sits at the root of the words for beauty, goodness, and good fortune — and, sounding the same as the word for the sun's bright yang, the sheep stands for the turn from winter to spring, the return of warmth and luck. A quiet, kindly emblem of peace, prosperity, and a household at ease.

【 The Function 】

A small good-fortune ornament, easy to place and easy to live with. It takes up almost no room — a shelf, a cabinet, a desk, an entrance, a New-Year display — and its rounded, low-slung shape reads clearly from any side. Light and self-contained, it is made to be brought out for the New Year and pleasant enough to keep out all year. Set it where its soft gold can catch the light.

【 The Texture 】

A soft champagne gold in a fine, sandy, frosted finish — not the mirror shine of bright gilding but a granular, matte-glittering surface, scattered with countless tiny facets that break the light and scatter it softly. The effect is warm rather than flashy: the ram seems to glow from within under a lamp rather than throw a hard metallic glare, and the grain of the finish does double duty as the crimped texture of a fleece. The curled horns and the muzzle are worked a little smoother, so they catch a brighter highlight against the frosted coat, and a single fold marks the neck. Light in the hand, and quietly luminous from any angle.

【 Presence 】

Calm, warm, and gently auspicious. Where a bright ornament dazzles, this one simply glows — a small, soft-gold animal with a mild, almost-sleeping face, entirely at peace. It brings a shelf a note of quiet luxury and good cheer without ever shouting, and the sheep's old meanings — harmony, family, gentleness, prosperity — sit easily in its unassuming shape. A small, kindly thing to keep in view: a wish for a peaceful, well-provided household, in the warm colour of good fortune.
