This unique style belongs to the "Obata Clay Doll" lineage, a tradition protected by a single family (the Hosoi family) for over 300 years in Shiga Prefecture. Since the 18th century, they have been crafting these surreal forms for travelers on the ancient Nakasendo highway.
The Design:
The form is surprisingly modern, almost like a Brâncuși sculpture.
Painted with natural pigments on a white shell-powder base, the soft yellow and bold red line create a warm, peaceful presence. Unlike fierce dragons, this one does not fight; it sits quietly to bring good luck.
